About the role

Job summary

This PhD position focuses on the innovative research of biogas conversion into protein-rich biomass using microalgae-bacteria consortia. The role is part of a collaborative project aimed at enhancing sustainable bio-based technologies and involves working in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.

Qualifications

  • MSc degree in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemical Engineering, Life Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience with microbial consortia, gas fermentation, and knowledge of biogas systems or waste-to-resource technologies.
  • Familiarity with genome-scale metabolic modeling and flux balance analysis is advantageous.
  • Strong writing and communication skills with a track record of publishing high-impact research.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international setting.

Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct experiments on microbial consortia for single-cell protein production from biogas.
  • Investigate interactions between bacteria and microalgae to optimize fermentation performance and yield.
  • Co-supervise MSc and BSc students.
  • Present research findings through scientific publications, conferences, and outreach activities.

Skills

  • Proficiency in microbial consortia and bioprocess modeling.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration abilities.

Education

  • A two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or equivalent academic qualification is required.

Tools

  • Experience with bioreactor systems and metabolic modeling software is beneficial.
