Job summary

The role involves supporting the identification, acquisition, assessment, and preparation of datasets relevant to marine protected area management across Latin America. The consultant will work to expand the dataset library available through Marine Manager, focusing on high-value marine datasets that aid in conservation planning and decision-making.

Qualifications

  • Experience with marine spatial datasets, biodiversity and conservation datasets, and geospatial platforms.
  • Familiarity with marine conservation initiatives in the Latin American context.
  • Proven ability to identify, acquire, license, curate, and manage environmental datasets.
  • Experience in preparing datasets for integration into spatial data platforms, including data cleaning and harmonization.
  • Background in collaborating with government agencies, research institutions, and NGOs in Latin America.

Responsibilities

  • Identify regional, national, and site-specific datasets relevant to marine protected area management.
  • Contact government agencies, MPA managers, academic institutions, and NGOs to identify potential datasets.
  • Assess datasets based on relevance, accessibility, ownership, quality, and compatibility.
  • Develop and present a prioritized list of datasets for acquisition.
  • Lead efforts to obtain access to priority datasets and assess licensing requirements.
  • Support the curation, cleaning, and documentation of datasets for integration into Marine Manager.
  • Work with the technical team to facilitate dataset integration and ensure proper metadata is provided.
  • Identify opportunities for future dataset acquisition.
  • Develop and deliver analytical reports combining Global Fishing Watch datasets with newly acquired datasets.

Education

  • Relevant degree in marine science, environmental science, data science, or a related field.

Tools

  • Familiarity with geospatial software and data management tools.
