About the role

Job summary

A PhD student position is available in the Bioconversions group focusing on anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass and lignin valorization. The role involves monitoring microbial interactions during anaerobic digestion and enhancing the process through lignin valorization. The research is interdisciplinary and includes various techniques such as reactor operation and bioinformatics.

Qualifications

  • MSc degree in Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience in bioinformatics, fermentation, reactor operation, and analysis of anaerobic digestion metabolites.
  • Proven ability in developing and executing analytical protocols and wet lab experiments.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in microbial ecology related to bioprocess development.
  • Publish findings and engage in societal outreach.
  • Design and execute bioreactor experiments to study microbial interactions.
  • Develop and refine wet lab and analytical protocols for microbial process analysis.
  • Utilize computational tools for bioinformatics and metabolic modeling.
  • Test processes to add value to lignin.
  • Supervise undergraduate and master's student projects.

Education

  • A two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or equivalent is required.

Tools

  • Experience with bioreactors, bioinformatics software, and analytical chemistry techniques is essential.
