Optical Engineer

Job summary

The role involves supporting the development, assembly, and testing of custom laser systems and optical subsystems, collaborating closely with senior engineering staff. The position requires hands-on experience with free-space optical setups and the ability to design and execute experiments to evaluate new optical system concepts.

Qualifications

• Background in optical engineering, physics, or a related field.
• Hands-on experience with laser systems, particularly ultrafast and/or high-power continuous wave (CW) laser sources.
• Understanding of optical modes in fibers and their effects on coupling and system performance.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the development and testing of optical assemblies and subsystems.
• Conduct characterization and testing of laser systems and fiber-optic assemblies to validate designs.
• Support high-power laser testing of optical components.
• Contribute to optical prescriptions and layouts using design tools such as Zemax.
• Document experimental setups, test results, and assembly procedures.

Skills

• Proficiency in optical test and measurement, including laser and beam characterization.
• Experience with free-space optics, including alignment and coupling into optical fibers.

Education

• Degree in optical engineering, physics, or a closely related discipline.

Tools

• Optical design software (e.g., Zemax).
