Lead Engineer - Data & AI

Job summary

This role involves significant architectural ownership of a data and AI platform, requiring a senior engineer to design and build critical system components. The position emphasizes hands-on coding and the development of robust, scalable solutions within a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in architecture and system design, with a history of delivering systems for multiple teams.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems fundamentals and non-functional requirements such as reliability and security.
• Expertise in data engineering, including platform-level design and performance tuning.
• Proficient in software engineering practices, including service and API design, and observability.
• Familiarity with AI and machine learning concepts, particularly in model deployment and machine learning pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture for major platform components and data products, ensuring interoperability and flexibility.
• Write and deploy production code, focusing on complex components and reference implementations.
• Define target architectures and migration paths, considering cost and operational load.
• Design foundational elements for data contracts, lineage, and access control.
• Establish agentic engineering practices and internal tooling standards.
• Collaborate with stakeholders on technical risk and project sequencing.

Skills

• Proficient in programming languages such as Python, R, and SQL for data manipulation and analysis.
• Experience with machine learning and AI systems, including automated workflows for model training and deployment.
• Strong data analysis skills, with the ability to cleanse, transform, and model data effectively.

Education

• Relevant degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is preferred.

Tools

• Familiarity with tools for infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform), container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes), and data transformation frameworks (e.g., dbt).
