Job summary

The Emergency Manager oversees the Emergency Management Division, providing leadership and direction in administering the emergency management program for a city with over 150,000 residents. This role involves developing policies and coordinating responses to various emergencies, ensuring effective communication and protection for citizens.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in emergency management or related field with 8 years of experience, or a master's degree with 6 years of experience.
  • Leadership experience in emergency management or public safety.
  • Experience in developing and evaluating emergency exercises.
  • Knowledge of emergency management principles, public safety, and relevant laws.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate and update emergency management plans for various disaster scenarios.
  • Engage with community groups and elected officials on preparedness and public safety.
  • Act as a liaison for emergency management associations.
  • Coordinate multi-agency participation in large public events.
  • Develop relationships with municipalities and state agencies for mutual planning and response.
  • Ensure compliance of emergency operating plans with laws and regulations.
  • Conduct exercises to practice emergency operations.

Skills

  • Strong leadership and management skills in emergency response operations.
  • Effective communication and collaboration abilities with various stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Excel, and Word.

Education

  • Required certifications include various FEMA Incident Command System courses and the Associate Emergency Manager Designation.

Tools

  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems is preferred.
