About the role

Job summary

A 1½ year postdoctoral position is available in the Sustainable Microbial Application group at a leading technical university, starting September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The role focuses on optimizing enzyme expression and performance for an enzymatic reaction cascade aimed at producing KDG from seaweed carbohydrates.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • Experience in molecular biology and protein engineering.
  • Fluent in English (written and verbal).
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.
  • Mature and calm under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Enhance protein expression of selected variants in E. coli BL21 (DE3).
  • Engineer enzyme properties to improve the enzymatic catalysis process using experimental and computational methods.
  • Conduct protein expression, purification, and characterization through biochemical assays.
  • Utilize structural information for enzyme engineering based on protein libraries.
  • Regularly present research findings and publish results in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Teach and supervise PhD, MSc, and BSc students.

Skills

  • Strong motivation for science and sustainability.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.

Education

  • A formal qualification of a PhD degree (or equivalent) is required.

Tools

  • Familiarity with biochemical assays and molecular biology techniques.
