PhD Candidate in Fisheries and Bycatch Mitigation

Job summary

A PhD scholarship is available focusing on the interactions between fisheries and endangered, threatened, and protected (ETP) species, particularly harbour porpoises. The position involves fieldwork and the application of mathematical and statistical models to marine resources, starting on October 1st, 2026. The research aims to develop effective bycatch mitigation strategies and contribute to sustainable fisheries management.

Qualifications

• A two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or equivalent academic level.
• M.Sc. degree in Biology, Aquatic Science & Technology, or a related field.
• Familiarity with animal behavior and/or freshwater/marine ecology.
• Experience and interest in data science and statistical analyses, preferably using R.

Responsibilities

• Participate in national and EU-funded projects focusing on bycatch mitigation solutions.
• Analyze and publish studies on the impact of bycatch on fisheries.
• Collect and analyze field trials of porpoise behavior and run fisheries impact scenarios using the DISPLACE model.
• Engage in teaching and supervise BSc and MSc student projects.

Skills

• Strong analytical skills.
• Documented interest in fisheries interactions.
• Experience with DISPLACE is advantageous.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English.
• Ability to work independently and in teams.

Education

• A master's degree in a relevant field is required.

Tools

• Experience with statistical analysis software, preferably R.
• Familiarity with the DISPLACE model for fisheries management.
