UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship position focusing on IT advocacy within the Information Technology Service (ITS), IT Site and Emergency Support Unit. at UNHCR Copenhagen.

Organizational context

Information Technology (IT) enables better and faster humanitarian assistance and protection - from biometric registration and data management, to cash-based interventions and reporting - as well as supports the safety and productivity of humanitarian workers in the field. The Information Technology Service (ITS) provides a secure and evolving digital ecosystem for UNHCR across the globe, ensuring the right information and communications solutions are designed, developed and maintained in a cost-effective, timely and secure manner enabling UNHCR to deliver for the people we serve.

The IT Site and Emergency Support Unit (SESU) acts as a liaison between Headquarters and country operations, providing information technology leadership, support, and strategic direction.

The Position

Within SESU, the Advocacy & Reporting Officer plays a key role in building visibility for IT colleagues and solutions across UNHCR. The role helps overcome internal information silos, raises awareness of IT’s critical contribution to UNHCR’s mandate, and supports emergency coordination by translating technical concepts into accessible language for non-technical audiences. It also includes advocating for IT colleagues, fostering partnerships to showcase partner contributions, and ensuring a consistent look and feel in all IT-related communications.

We are looking for a dynamic and creative intern who has a strong interest in communications, who can support the Advocacy & Reporting Officer within SESU.

The incumbent will report to and work closely with the SESU Advocacy & Reporting Officer.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced and reactive environment, have the skills and ability to support planning and creating content, and be a creative problem-solver with a can-do attitude.

Duties and responsibilities

• Research and draft creative and engaging editorial, including articles, listicles, profiles, and other content in collaboration with UNHCR colleagues around the world;
• Conduct a review of IT Intranet pages, collaborating with content focal points across the globe, editing and updating content, reviewing performance reports and making suggestions for improvement;
• Support implementation of communication and reporting activities and strategies, including drafting and editing materials such as guides, factsheets, and reports;
• Routinely update key information-sharing and collaboration platforms;
• Support coordination and production of visibility and multimedia material, such as posters and videos;
• Assist in organizing meetings, workshops and other events that are led by or facilitated by SESU;
• Track action items and prepare information packages in support of coordination with internal and external partners;
• Undertake any other tasks assigned.

Minimum qualifications required

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.
• not have exhausted the maximum cumulative internship period with UNHCR, including any prior internships (8 months for full-time and 12 months for part-time)

NOTE: An individual who bears the relationship of parent, child or sibling or step-parent, step-child or step-sibling to a current UNHCR staff member or affiliate is not eligible for an internship.

Desirable qualifications and skills

• First Required Language is English at B2 level
• The candidate must have a strong interest in communication work and be able to speak and write clearly and effectively.
• Knowledge of Microsoft 365.
• Familiarity with design and video editing software (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, Adobe Premiere) is an advantage.
• Excellent English communication skills, both orally and in writing, are essential. Knowledge of another UN language is an asset.

Conditions

It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9.00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be either home-based or with the team in the Copenhagen, Denmark.

Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.

Travel: Unless provided or paid by external sponsoring entities, UNHCR reimburse interns engaged from a location outside of the country of the duty station for the ticket costs of their outward and return travel to/from the duty station by the most economical route available on economy class, irrespective of the duration of the journey. Reimbursement shall be limited to the authorized outward and return travel between the intern’s country of residence and the intern’s duty station, or actual route of travel, whichever is lower.

Before travel is undertaken, the selected intern must obtain authorization in writing from the hiring office. Such authorization must include the approved cost of the ticket.

Internships normally last two to six months with the possibility of extension up to eight months for full-time internships and twelve months for part-time internships.

Obligations

Acquiring and renewing current visas, residence permits including all associated costs, obtaining medical certification and compliance with taxation requirements (if applicable), are the responsibility of the intern.

The selected candidate will need to provide UNHCR with a proof of health insurance coverage applicable to the assigned internship location and a certificate of good health from a qualified medical practitioner certifying their fitness for work and travel. In the event the selected candidate is not able to produce the required certificates, they will not be admitted to the Internship Programme.
