Workload Virtualization Lead
Workload Virtualization Lead

Drive TDC NET's migration from proprietary hypervisors to open, automated virtualization platforms — shaping how VMs and containers coexist in a modern, hybrid infrastructure.

TDC NET is going through one of the largest transformation and modernization phases in its long history. This is an opportunity to revamp and shape TDC NET's vast estate from the ground up as TDC NET positions itself to become a leading technology provider.

About the job

As Workload Virtualization Lead, you will lead the evolution of our virtual infrastructure from legacy and proprietary stacks to modern, open, and automation-driven platforms. You will design and operate robust VM platforms across multiple technologies and help define how VMs and containers coexist in a hybrid, cloud-native environment.

Key responsibilities:

  • Own the virtualization platform strategy — defining the target architecture for VM workloads across XCP-ng, KubeVirt, and any retained legacy hypervisors.
  • Plan and execute migrations from proprietary hypervisors (VMware) to open, commodity-based virtualization stacks at datacenter scale.
  • Design and operate high-availability, clustering, live migration, and disaster recovery for virtualized environments.
  • Deliver infrastructure as code (Terraform, Ansible) for VM lifecycle operations — provisioning, golden image management, cloud-init, and immutable infrastructure patterns.
  • Integrate VM workloads with monitoring, CI/CD, and GitOps pipelines, ensuring VMs are managed with the same rigour as containers.
  • Collaborate with compute, storage, network, and SRE teams to troubleshoot complex workload, scaling, and performance issues spanning the full stack.
  • Guide teams in choosing the right platform for each workload — helping the organization navigate the boundary between containers and traditional VMs.
  • Champion DevOps culture, GitOps workflows, and an automation-first operating model across the virtualization domain.

“This is a rare opportunity to lead the shift from proprietary appliances to open, automated, hyperscaler-inspired compute — defining how TDC NET builds, provisions, and operates its server fleets at scale.” says Malcolm Mullafiroze, Director of Platform Engineering.

About you

You have deep roots in enterprise virtualization, but you're not sentimental about it — you see the shift to open platforms as an opportunity, not a threat. You're the kind of engineer who builds migration runbooks, not slide decks about migration. You think about VM workloads the way cloud-native engineers think about containers: automated, observable, disposable, and version-controlled. You take full ownership of your domain, keep stakeholders informed, and find energy in mentoring teams through unfamiliar technology transitions.

Core Skills:

Proficient in scripting and infrastructure automation languages, such as at least one of: Python, Bash, PowerShell, Terraform, Ansible. Experience in other languages (Rust, Java, Go, C/C++/C#) is also valued for highly qualified candidates.

Role-Specific Requirements:

  • Extensive experience with virtualization platforms, especially VMware and/or large-scale data centre virtualization.
  • Solid experience deploying and migrating to at least one open alternative such as XCP-ng, Proxmox, and/or KubeVirt. Experience with Harvester or Rancher.
  • Experience planning and executing hypervisor migrations at scale — including workload assessment, compatibility testing, and cutover orchestration.
  • Solid understanding of VM performance tuning concepts: NUMA, CPU pinning, hugepages, and optimization for NFV/telco and latency-sensitive workloads.
  • Experience with image management, golden templates, cloud-init, and immutable infrastructure patterns for VMs.
  • Understanding high-availability, clustering, live migration, and DR designs for virtualized environments.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex issues spanning compute, storage, network, and application layers.
  • Commitment to open-source, open-standards, and sovereign (DK/EU) solutions — with awareness of licensing, TCO, and vendor lock-in considerations.
