Compute Lead
Compute Lead

We are looking for an experienced highly technical leader specialized in all things hyperscaler to direct strategy to modernize and transform TDCs warehouse-scale data center infrastructure.

TDC NET is going through one of the largest transformation and modernization phases in its long history. This is an opportunity to revamp and shape TDC NET's vast estate from the ground up as TDC NET positions itself to become a leading technology provider.

About the job

As Compute Lead, you will define and operate the compute foundation for TDC NET’s platforms, transitioning from appliancecentric and proprietary solutions to flexible, automated, and vendorneutral compute fabrics inspired by hyperscaler practices. You will ensure that our server fleets are efficient, observable, and easy to consume via APIs and selfservice.

Key responsibilities:

  • Own the compute platform strategy — standardizing server SKUs, hardware generations, and configurations across TDC NET's data centres.
  •  Drive the transition from proprietary appliances to disaggregated, commodity server fleets built on open standards.
  • Architect and automate the full hardware lifecycle using DC management tooling (e.g. NetBox) — from demand identification and specification through BOM, procurement logistics, rack placement, cabling, cooling, and power.
  • Build and maintain out-of-band management automation (Redfish, IPMI, OpenBMC) for provisioning, inventory, firmware, and lifecycle operations at scale.
  •  Deliver infrastructure as code (Terraform, Ansible, python, powershell etc) for bare-metal provisioning, configuration, and day-2 operations using tools such as MAAS, Ironic, or Foreman.
  • Enable self-service compute capabilities for internal platform consumers via APIs and automation.
  •  Experience leading technical engineers and working with cross-functional IT
  • Collaborate with storage, network, workload, and SRE teams to design balanced server configurations and ensure end-to-end observability and reliability.
  • Champion DevOps culture, GitOps workflows, and an automation-first operating model across the compute domain.

This is a rare opportunity to lead the shift from proprietary appliances to open, automated, hyperscaler-inspired compute — defining how TDC NET builds, provisions, and operates its server fleets at scale.” says Malcolm Mullafiroze, Director of Platform Engineering.

About you

You are motivated by transformation and thrive in environments where you can replace legacy complexity with clean, repeatable, automated systems. You think at fleet scale — reasoning thousands of nodes as a single system, designing continuous hardware failure as a normal operating condition, and connecting every engineering decision to cost and energy efficiency.

You combine deep hardware knowledge with a software-minded approach to infrastructure — you'd rather write code to manage ten thousand servers than manually configure ten. You take full ownership of your domain, communicate clearly, and find energy in mentoring others through the shift to open, modern platforms.

RoleSpecific Requirements:

  • Deep understanding of server platforms and architectures, including different server types (rack, blade, hyper‑converged, GPU/accelerator nodes, edge form factors).
  • Solid experience designing and operating large fleets of commodity servers, with a focus on standardization and repeatability rather than proprietary appliances.
  • Experience transitioning from appliance‑based solutions to disaggregated, commodity compute platforms.
  • Extensive experience with out‑of‑band management automation (e.g. IPMI, Redfish, iLO/iDRAC, OpenBMC) for provisioning, inventory, and lifecycle operations.
  • Proficiency in using automation to manage firmware and BIOS/UEFI updates safely at scale (rolling updates, compliance baselines, testing).
  • Experience with bare‑metal provisioning and lifecycle management tools (e.g. MAAS, Foreman, Cobbler, Ironic, or similar).
  • Familiarity with hardware health monitoring, capacity planning, and predictive maintenance.
  • Ability to collaborate with storage, network, and workload teams to design balanced server configurations for different use cases (compute‑heavy, storage‑heavy, GPU/accelerator, NFV, etc.).
  • Understanding of hyperscaler‑style concepts such as:
    - Separation of control plane vs. data plane.
    - Server SKU standardization and hardware generations.
    - Treating infrastructure as cattle, not pets.
    - Experience working with vendors while actively avoiding lockin, leveraging open standards  and opensource tooling wherever possible.
  • Familiarity with cost optimization, total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis, and sustainability/energy efficiency considerations for compute.
