Job summary

This position offers a 3-year PhD opportunity focused on environmental toxicology and endocrine disruption, specifically utilizing zebrafish to identify endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The role is based in the Ecotoxicology group at a university, which has extensive experience in ecotoxicology research and collaborations with various environmental agencies and research networks.

Qualifications

  • MSc degree in biology or a related field
  • Background in environmental toxicology
  • Strong proficiency in English, both written and verbal
  • Experience with endocrine-disrupting chemicals and their mechanisms
  • Experimental experience with zebrafish as a model organism
  • Proficiency in laboratory techniques, including OECD fish test protocols, histopathology, and behavioral analysis
  • Advantageous: experience in statistical analysis (e.g., R), conducting literature reviews, and understanding Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs)

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and pre-validate new endpoints in zebrafish for assessing endocrine disruption
  • Expose zebrafish to suspected and known EDCs and evaluate potential biomarkers
  • Compare effects in different life stages of zebrafish
  • Analyze data for extrapolation to other vertebrate classes using AOPs

Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team

Education

  • MSc degree in biology or equivalent

Tools

  • Laboratory equipment for histopathology, imaging, spectroscopy, and gene expression profiling
