About the role

Job summary

This position involves a 3-year PhD project focused on developing AI-assisted methods for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and sustainability evaluation, particularly in the context of emerging bio-based technologies. The role is expected to start in September 2026 or shortly thereafter, and is part of ongoing EU-funded research initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Relevant MSc degree in environmental engineering, sustainability assessment, industrial ecology, chemical engineering, bioengineering, data science, computer science, or a related field.
  • Practical knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment and environmental footprinting.
  • Programming experience in Python, R, MATLAB, or similar tools, with a focus on quantitative data and reproducible workflows.
  • Familiarity with AI methods applicable to scientific data analysis and environmental assessment.
  • Understanding of large language models and related AI techniques, including awareness of potential risks.
  • Strong English communication skills, both written and spoken.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate AI-assisted workflows for life cycle inventory data collection and quality assurance.
  • Investigate trustworthy AI applications for quantitative sustainability assessments.
  • Enhance data quality, transparency, and reproducibility in AI-supported LCA workflows.
  • Design methods to mitigate unsupported AI outputs and ensure data integrity.
  • Apply developed methods to relevant sustainability assessment case studies.
  • Document assumptions, data sources, and model choices in AI-assisted assessments.
  • Contribute to scientific publications and collaborate with academic and industrial partners.
