Job summary

This position offers a 3-year PhD opportunity focused on end-of-life pathways for plastic products, specifically recycling waste from 3D printing. The role involves interdisciplinary research aimed at reducing the environmental impact of plastics through collaboration with industrial partners. The candidate will develop strategies for measuring and enhancing the recycling of specialty plastics while working within a cross-disciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • MSc degree in engineering (e.g., environmental or mechanical engineering), materials science, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
  • Experience in lab-based research.

Responsibilities

  • Develop quantitative criteria for incineration and recycling as end-of-life pathways.
  • Create a framework for the end-of-life routes of specialty polymers across various industries.
  • Investigate the feasibility of a mobile measurement system for waste pathway decisions.
  • Disseminate research findings through academic publications and corporate presentations.
  • Supervise B.Eng., B.Sc., and M.Sc. students.
  • Complete a research stay abroad lasting 1-3 months.

Skills

  • Life cycle assessment (LCA) or sustainability assessment methods.
  • Polymer characterization techniques (e.g., tensile testing, DSC).
  • Business case development.

Education

  • A two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or equivalent.

Tools

  • Research and analytical tools relevant to materials science and environmental assessment.
