Join us as our new student assistant
In Microbe and Culture Research (MCR), we are strengthening our data and digitalization infrastructure and are looking for a student assistant who is excited about bioinformatics, data science, and building practical solutions for scientists. You will get hands-on experience working close to real R&D workflows, where good data access and automation can make a measurable difference to how quickly we learn from experiments and deliver new biosolutions.
Welcome to the MCR Data Support Team
You will be part of our Data Support Team that is leading our digitalization efforts across the function. The MCR Data Support Team helps the organization by consulting on data-related problems, improving data processes toward FAIR and automated data, driving best practices and data strategy, and supporting upskilling and a stronger data culture across Microbe and Culture Research. We collaborate closely with domain experts, and we take pride in being approachable, practical, and focused on solutions that people actually use.
In this role you’ll make an impact by:
You will support the Data Support Team and scientists in Microbe and Culture Research with building tools and improving how we access and use scientific data. Concretely, you will contribute to:
Developing Jupyter notebooks and lightweight apps/tools that help scientists explore, transform, and visualize data.
Creating or improving data pipelines and workflow automation to make data more accessible and reusable.
Solving programming tasks such as bug fixing, small system improvements, and prototype development.
Responding to requests via our issue trackers, and helping prioritize/clarify requirements with stakeholders.
Collaborating directly with scientists to understand needs and help design simple, robust technical solutions (APIs, data access patterns, notebook templates, etc.).
To succeed you must hold:
You are currently studying (BSc/MSc) in bioinformatics, data science, computer science, or a related field, and are motivated to apply your skills to biological R&D problems.
Strong practical experience with Python (writing clean, reusable code; using notebooks effectively).
Interest in learning internal scientific data systems and APIs, and a curiosity for how data flows through real research workflows.
Basic understanding of database concepts; SQL is a plus.
You enjoy collaborating with end users, able to translate a scientist’s question into a practical technical solution and communicate progress clearly.
You are structured and reliable: able to manage small tasks, document what you build, and follow through
Familiarity with Git, simple web apps, and workflow design is beneficial.
Application deadline: 13th March 2026
