Interested in a career that matters?
Fermentation Technology is part of Production Strain Technology (PST) within R&D. We work at the intersection of biology, engineering, and data science to develop and optimize fermentation processes before scale‑up.
We are looking for a data scientist with an interest in biological systems and fermentation, motivated to apply AI/ML to real experimental workflows. In this role, you will combine strong data science expertise with fermentation context to improve process understanding, guide experiments, and accelerate optimization. You will collaborate closely with scientists and technicians to link data, models, and experimental workflows in a continuous learning loop. This is a unique opportunity to help shape how AI/ML drives data-driven fermentation optimization.
The Role & Your Impact
As our new (Senior) Data Scientist, you will play a central role in turning complex fermentation datasets into actionable insights. By combining scientific understanding with machine learning, you will strengthen process knowledge, enable smarter experiments, and accelerate optimization.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Developing predictive models to understand and optimize fermentation performance
Using modelling to guide experimental design and prioritize high‑value experiments
Integrating and analyzing data from bioreactors, screening platforms, and analytical systems
Translating data insights into practical strategies at lab scale
Building simple internal tools (e.g., Python/Streamlit apps) that make models accessible across teams
Contributing to automated data workflows and digitalization initiatives
Exploring new data sources, new measurements, and sensor technologies
What we’re looking for
Strong background in data science, ideally combined with experience in fermentation, supported by an MSc or PhD in Data Science, Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Bioinformatics, or a related field.”Experience with machine learning, statistical modelling, and time-series data
Strong skills in Python (or similar) for data analysis and modelling, including work with small, feature-rich datasets and hybrid models (mechanistic + data-driven)
Understanding of experimental design (DoE), optimization, and experience with biological or process data (fermentation is a plus)
Experience turning models into practical tools (e.g. Streamlit, Dash, Shiny) and working with electronic lab notebooks (e.g. Benchling) with structured documentation
Strong collaboration skills and ability to work across disciplines
What success looks like
Predictive models that improve fermentation performance
Smarter experiments with fewer runs and faster learning
Integrated datasets across experiments and systems
Scalable digital tools enabling data-driven development
