The Operator Technical (OT) serves as the Central Control Room (CCR) operator and is responsible for the majority of communication both to and from the rig. The OT position also function as the operating and watchkeeping role for the power supply system and the basic auxiliary systems onboard.
Responsibility:
- Routine checks of the machinery, planning of the maintenance under his responsibility as assigned by superior in conjunction with the Operator Drilling.
- Monitor gauges, alarms, and general conditions of machinery and equipment. Line up systems and ensure the machinery is running smoothly. If repairs are needed inform the Mechanic, Electronic Technician or Electrician on duty, and assist with the repairs if needed.
- Monitor Rig Control Network (RCN), critical alarms, fire & gas alarms, emergency shutdown (ESD) alarms, engine room alarms and any other alarm systems with indicators, alarms and controls installed in the Central Control Room (CCR) and act upon the alarms
- Perform planned and corrective maintenance (tanks, bilge, engine rooms and pump rooms) as directed by superiors and in accordance with established procedures.
- Keep the Technical Section Leader and OIM informed about any irregularities and immediately inform them on the detection of abnormal instrument readings or failure symptoms on critical equipment.
- Call in relevant personnel to fix faults on equipment or in the case of alarm situations.
- Operate communication equipment and monitor radio traffic in accordance with the requirements stipulated by the flag state of the rig and rules and regulations applicable to the operating area.
- Participate in the emergency preparedness drills, the safety meetings, and on-the-job training.
- Arrange/monitor communication according to Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) equipment onboard.
- Assist the Operator Drilling when needed.
- The Operator Drilling and Operator Technical are jointly responsible (but not limited) for the following administrative tasks:
- Ensure the various functions in the CCR are kept intact during various workloads
- Focal point for communication to the rig
- Communication internally on the rig (PA)
- Activation, deactivation and overview of work permits and isolations
- Monitor Automatic Identification System (AIS) if task not covered by nearby platforms (as instructed)
- Monitor and log positions of ships and helicopters trafficking to the rig, and maintain contact with standby boat and other vessels attending operation, ensure to carry out checklists prior to vessels entering the 500 m zone, ref. Guidelines for Offshore Marine Operations (GOMO) appendix 8-A
- Weather monitoring, work permit and isolation administrator, boat handling, handle and log helicopter landings and take off, handle call from shore
- Daily maintenance (routines) in SAP and Synergi
- Bunkering fuel and bulk
- Maintain updated call-out and notification lists pertaining to emergency response situations
- Being part of emergency response team and depending if on/off duty, muster in CCR or Emergency Control Centre (ECC) in case of an emergency
- Carry out administrative duties as directed by the OIM
- Substitute for arranging helicopter reports (information on number of passengers, the relevant weights, the clouds, the weather and amount of fuel) if planner on land is unavailable
- Tutoring assisting personnel in their tasks
- Perform helicopter flight monitoring and assist with weather condition reporting.

Where responsibility is allocated, the matching authority is also granted, unless otherwise stated. Stop any operation when deemed unsafe to continue
Documentation and record responsibilities:
- Filing of work permits and isolations (to be kept for 1 year)
- Keep work permits and isolations updated and filled after deactivation
- Log keeping: Radio log book and Oil journal
- Keep the necessary logbooks updated regarding communication and monitoring of helicopters, ships and alarms. Make sure that reports required by relevant authorities are sent in duly if not performed by onshore planner
- Handover reports
- Documentation and recording of jobs within duties and job areas.
Qualification requirements:
- Someone with minimum 3 years mechanical offshore experience (ships or drilling rig). Marine engineer background preferred.
- General mechanical experience
- Knowledge of plant operation, power management system, maintenance and computerized maintenance systems
- GMDSS General Operator's Certificate (GOC)
- Helicopter VHF certificate
- Safety training courses and medical certificate in accordance with the requirements stipulated for regular crew by the Continental Shelf Authority for the current operating area
- Training as per the Training Matrix or as designated by the company
- Administrative skills
- Computer literate
- Solid experience with diesel engines and hydraulic systems
- Preferably fluent in both English and Scandinavian language
