The Steelwork Field Engineer is a matrixed contributor to the wider EMEA Steelwork Operations Team. Responsible for the correct technical development of the "steelwork" part of a project in EMEA. Providing technical advice and support to the project team in the design and implementation phases but will be principally be active in all aspects of the execution stage.

The Steelwork Field Engineer manages internal and external layout engineers monitoring the consideration, development and implementation of the quality of steel structures supplied and erected for Dematic.

The Steelwork Field Engineer is analytical, cost-conscious and results-oriented, maintaining regular contact with the internal stakeholders (Solutions Development and/ or Engineering & Procurement) and other external stakeholders. The role primary function is to co-ordinate and lead a site team who accurately report on the safe and efficient execution of the steelwork part of the installation scope (at the point of work) for which it is their responsibility as directed by the Site Manager and Project Management. It is the Steelwork Field Engineer’s responsibility to oversee and deliver the specialist scope of works to the required standards. The Steelwork Field Engineer is the field authority on Dematic steelwork standards and the knowledgeable point of contact and escalation for subcontractors and site supervisors working on behalf of Dematic in steelwork and its interface with Dematic’s material handling equipment.

Steelwork Field Engineers monitor the progress of projects and ensure compliance with EHS regulations promoting and improving awareness, acting as a positive role model for site safety, a One Dematic culture, and right first-time steelwork installation. The Steelwork Field Engineer’s responsibilities include retaining a detailed understanding of the six-week installation schedule forecast for their area of expertise as directed by the Site Manager, a firm grasp of the inter-relationship between the 6WIS and the weekly work plan and how there is an onus on the Steelwork Field Engineer to positively influence the consistent attainment of targets associated with subcontractor progress. A Steelwork Field Engineer should also be able to accurately anticipate and mitigate impacts to the schedule to prevent slippage working collaboratively with the wider site/ project team. The Steelwork Field Engineer should also be capable of influencing and engaging a small team of supervisors on a project to make sure that the Site Manager enjoys specialist support, and that each steelwork area of the project is comprehensively under Dematic’s control and working in a way that is fully aligned with Dematic’s EMEA installation strategy.

Tasks and Qualifications:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides education to the subcontractor team in developing safety knowledge and hazard perception and encouraging the site team to engage in positive safety conversations and capturing the details of them by way of behavioural based safety observations. Acts as a positive role model for site safety, a One Dematic safety culture, and right first-time installation specifically associated with steelwork.

  • Monitor and feedback the adherence to RAMS by installers and offers effective supervision where there is increased risk. Producing timely reports in cloud-based site reporting tools (e.g. Gensuite) consistently, to a high standard on each agreed time period completed with accuracy, evidence-based content, and with relevance on progress and any events of note.

  • Coordinates and leads the organisation and supervision of all on-site steelwork activities driving safety & quality compliance on site throughout delivery lifecycle. Monitors the team undertaking regular quality checks on installation and related processes throughout project lifecycle and uses the QMS cloud-based reporting tool for capturing quality incidents. Collating of data from the relevant reports to identify trends and look to communicate and close any issues raised.

  • Contributes proactively with the Site Manager drafting the Site Installation Plan reference steelworks. Report any delays/ defects which may cause disruption to the installation plan and drive any remedial works to overcome the issues. Coordinating the successful and defect free installation handover to the mechanical installation team whilst providing on-going support up to and including handover to the customer.

  • The Steelwork Field Engineer can act as the first point of contact on site for assistance and resolution in safety/technical related enquiries related to steelwork in the relevant work areas/ PLC zones. Works collaboratively across various business functions i.e. Engineering, Procurement and Project Management.

  • Drives the execution of initiatives to optimize production and assembly rates. Undertakes improvement initiatives on projects, working closely with various disciplines on site. Provides guidance to new members of the team/ developing wider knowledge of steelwork with wider community of site supervisors identifying succession paths and disseminating specialist knowledge raising baseline competency around steelwork.

  • Proactively identifies and reports energy and resource waste-streams and implements onsite improvements to reduce and minimize waste.

Knowledge & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5+ years industry relevant experience including field engineering at a similar grade.

  • Contribute to the independent evaluation and the structural analysis of steel structures to safeguard the support and maintenance of "material handling systems" including optimising methods of safe erection and assembly of structures.

  • Contribute to the determination of the connection details for linking steel structures to the (existing) host building construction.

  • Collaborate effectively providing input to technical cost-conscious solutions or alternatives with respect to constructive design.

  • Perform basic calculations for sizing steel parts or associated civil parts and budget quantities and draw up cost calculations.

  • Compile and check the accuracy of all relevant technical information from the RFQs to the supplier.

  • Operate as an EMEA based point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding the technical development and assembly of the steel structures.

  • Where required engage layout engineers (internal or external) in the manufacture of 2D and 3D drawings of steel structures.

  • Monitor the quality of the product assembled and as delivered by visiting and auditing suppliers and sub-contractor performance in delivery. Experience with driving and managing sub-contractors and ability to communicate effectively.

  • Report periodically to the Group Leader Steelwork EMEA and EMEA Quality Manager.

  • Self-driven and a natural desire to progress within Dematic maintaining high personal standards/discipline.

  • Expert on technical content of steel structures associated with material handling systems.

  • Knowledge of market specific statutory regulations and structural standards.

  • Skilled with Microsoft Office and conversant with use of Autocad and Tekla.

  • Qualified First Aider (desirable).

  • Hold internationally recognised safety accreditation e.g. NEBOSH/ IOSH certificate is desirable
