You will be part of a research group which takes a holistic approach to wind turbine blades, integrating all aspects that contribute to their structural integrity, performance, and sustainability.

DTU Wind & Energy Systems invites applications with a talent and passion for structural analysis and digitalization for a position as postdoc at the section for Blade Testing and Design working with world leading university labs for testing and manufacturing wind turbine blades. Our section and labs have been evaluated to be of high international quality and recognized to be part of a truly unique world leading research centre. Besides doing advanced structural testing and measurements, we are also making the facilities internationally recognized as development and demonstration labs for Digital Twins and related digitalization technologies. Our projects have won prizes such as the JEC Composites Innovation Award 2024 in the Digital, AI & Data category.

Responsibilities and qualifications
We seek a Postdoc who can contribute to the development of computationally efficient modelling, data integration, and digital twin technologies within our projects, with a strong emphasis on real‑time prediction and interaction. You will join a cross-disciplinary, international team collaborating on supporting the R&D needs for key industry players in the wind energy industry. The areas of responsibility include:

  • Develop reduced‑order and low‑fidelity models for large composite wind turbine blades, enabling fast prediction of structural response and damage indicators for advanced monitoring and analysis.
  • Design hybrid physics‑based and data‑driven modelling approaches, integrating sensor data to achieve accurate, robust, and real‑time or near‑real‑time digital‑twin performance.
  • Contribute to next‑generation digital twin frameworks, combining simulation, uncertainty handling, and continuous updating across laboratory, sub‑component, and full‑scale blade tests.
  • Translate modelling and digital‑twin outputs into user‑facing applications, including APIs, data pipelines, and immersive visualisation (e.g. AR), and disseminate results through high‑impact publications and industrial demonstrations.
  • Strong expertise in structural mechanics and/or structural dynamics and composite materials.
  • Experience with reduced‑order modelling and model‑order reduction techniques for large structural systems.
  • Solid software development skills, preferably in Python and/or C++, including git and gitlab workflows, testing, and documentation.
  • Experience working with sensor data and integrating time‑series data into models for damage assessment, or NDT.
  • Skills in hybrid modelling, combining physics‑based models with machine‑learning or data‑driven approaches.
  • Understanding of digital twin concepts, including model updating, uncertainty handling, and lifecycle‑based prediction.
  • Experience developing APIs, interfaces, or data pipelines connecting simulation tools with user‑facing applications including visualization.
  • Familiarity with data standards, metadata, ontologies, and FAIR data principles for interoperable research software.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of scientific publications and teamwork across modelling and experimental domains.
  • Innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas.
  • Ability to contribute to the development of the department’s internal and external cooperation.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). Furthermore, good English communication skills are essential. Applicants should be highly motivated, ambitious, and eager to seek and share knowledge. You should also be willing and able to work independently towards research goals and through interdisciplinary collaboration with industrial partners and across the different sections in the DTU Wind & Energy Systems department.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
