Are you ready to take the next step in your scientific career and contribute to sustainable food production? As a PhD student at DTU National Food Institute, you will join a dedicated research team working on precision fermentation to develop novel food proteins, supporting innovation and the green transition.

Responsibilities and qualifications
At DTU National Food Institute, we are expanding our research in precision fermentation with a focus on strain optimization for recombinant production of food proteins. This PhD project will concentrate on improving Bacillus subtilis for enhanced secretion of functional food proteins. The work will involve extensive molecular biology and high-throughput screening. You will join a small, dedicated team working at the forefront of sustainable food innovation.

The ideal candidate has

  • Solid hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques, including DNA assembly, oligo design, and sequencing analysis
  • Practical experience with protein expression, purification, and characterization
  • Experience in optimizing Bacillus subtilis for protein secretion, e.g., using CRISPR-Cas technology
  • Strong English communication skills, written and spoken
  • Additional experience as a research assistant after your master’s thesis is considered an advantage

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment 
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education

Salary and appointment terms 
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years. 

The starting date is 1 May 2026 or as soon as possible after that (according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time position.
