Senior Compliance Counsel

At Bavarian Nordic, we are committed to saving and improving lives by unlocking the power of the immune system. Our commercial product portfolio includes market-leading vaccines against smallpox, mpox, rabies, tick-borne encephalitis, typhoid fever, and cholera. We excel in R&D innovation, manufacturing, and commercialization, striving to improve people's health and quality of life worldwide, protecting our tomorrow.

We are seeking a Senior Compliance Counsel who will take ownership of global compliance monitoring and third-party due diligence in a regulated, international environment. This includes leading and further develop key elements of our global compliance framework, including speak‑up, audits, third‑party due diligence, and the global sanctions & export controls program.

The role is an individual contributor role, located at our headquarters in Hellerup and reports to our Compliance Director. You will join the Legal & Compliance team of approximately twelve.

The role
As Senior Compliance Counsel, you will have end‑to‑end responsibility for designing, implementing, and continuously improving core compliance programs. You will work closely with global senior leadership and stakeholders across functions such as Finance, Commercial, and Medical Affairs, and you will act as a trusted advisor on compliance risks and controls.

The role is suitable for experienced candidates from both the finance and legal professions, reflecting the broad scope and strategic nature of the responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead global compliance monitoring and review activities, including audits of third parties, grants & donations, HCP transfers of value, anti‑competitive agreements, and engagements involving restricted parties or sanctioned countries
  • Own, further develop, and drive the global third‑party due diligence framework, including screening, monitoring, mitigating, and documentation processes
  • Lead the day‑to‑day operation of the speak‑up framework, including oversight of case intake, case management, and follow‑up in collaboration with relevant stakeholders
  • Own the global sanctions and export controls program, including risk assessments, monitoring of higher‑risk engagements, implementation of controls, and stakeholder alignment
  • Draft and maintain global compliance policies, procedures, and guidance supporting effective controls and consistent implementation
  • Prepare and present periodic compliance reporting to relevant committees and senior management

What you bring
At Bavarian Nordic, we are driven by purpose and accountability. We are open to different professional backgrounds and value strong compliance expertise and sound judgment over a specific title or career path - whether from a legal, audit, finance, or business background. Most importantly you thrive at the intersection of governance, risk, and stakeholder collaboration.

You likely bring:

  • A master’s degree in law, finance/accounting, or a related field
  • 7+ years of experience in global corporate compliance, internal audit, or a similar role, preferably from a regulated industry (e.g. pharmaceuticals, medical devices, or finance)
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to manage complex compliance programs end‑to‑end
  • Prior experience owning and driving a global compliance process, such as third-party due diligence or internal compliance auditing
  • Proven stakeholder management skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across functions and seniority levels
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Why this role
This is a unique time to join Bavarian Nordic; as we continue our professionalization of our Compliance function, you will – together with the rest of the legal & compliance team, be the guardian of our “compliance frameworks”.

This position offers a unique opportunity for you to:

  • Take end-to-end ownership of key global compliance programs
Work at a strategic level, with visibility toward senior management and governance forums
  • Join a compliance function where professionalism, integrity, and collaboration are core values
